The performance encourages students to look for the cultural elements — particularly music, visual arts and dance — that unite all people. Backed by her band of Friends, Robbi K performs in many languages, including Spanish, Hebrew, Hindi, Hausa, Zulu, Arabic, Latin, and English. Using many creative methods of audience outreach and participation, like call and response and body movements — Robbi K encourages audiences to further develop an understanding of and respect for diversity in language use, patterns, and dialects across cultures, ethnic groups, geographic regions, and social roles. Keep the Beat! runs approximately 50 minutes, is suitable for grades K thru 7 and the suggested audience size is 225 students max. Children exposed to these songs will not only be singing them for many years to come but hopefully will be inspired to become loving and open-minded participants in the global community. Like all of Robbi K's productions, this program can be adapted for any age group or special needs. Through engaging classroom activities both before and after the show, students will connect with geography and literacy standards. Curriculum connections: multi-cultural studies, global studies, and language other than English; Art forms: music, social studies, and storytelling. In terms of understanding the cultural dimensions and contributions of the arts; students will further develop an understanding of the personal and cultural forces that shape artistic communication and how the arts in turn shape the diverse cultures of past and present society. Another standard is responding to and analyzing works of art: Keep the Beat! encourages students to respond critically to works in the arts, connecting the individual work to other works and to other aspects of human endeavor and thought.
