Songs of Freedom
(Suitable for grades 4 - 10)

Ring Shout - Songs of Freedom/Robbi K & Friends

Music is a powerful tool for any cause and one of the highest causes: human freedom.
Songs of freedom have appeared at every point in U.S. history.

Anti-British and pro-independence songs were heard well before the American Revolution. Many of the spirituals sung by slaves in the Old South show a clear longing for freedom, couched in unimpeachable religious terms. Nowadays, modern folk music is often influenced by political ideas while often maintaining a rebellious spirit.

Robbi K & Friends focus on 2 pivotal times in American history:    Slavery & the Civil Rights Movement.  This mostly a cappella concert filled with positive energy and harmonic artistry, gets students to participate enthusiastically; clapping and waving hands while Robbi K conveys historical dates and events of the African American experience. When children hear these Songs of Freedom again, they’ll have a deeper understanding of their meaning.

Curriculum connections include multi-cultural studies and American History. Art forms include music, social studies, and storytelling. Songs of Freedom runs approximately 50 minutes, is suitable for grades 4 thru 10, and suggested audience size is 350 students.  Study guide and script soon available online.
